How to Create Your Own Tennessee Farmstand

A fresh produce stand with baskets of vegetables
Farmstands have become all the rage on social media and during the summertime season.

If you have a garden, bees or can whip up baked treats, you may be tempted to start your own.

Here are a few steps to get you started.

Decide what you want to sell
Your farmstand has so many opportunities for you to be creative. If you have a garden, you can sell the fruits and vegetables you have accumulated. Chickens? Find a cooler to sell those eggs. Our striped yellow and black friends can produce amazing honey you can bottle. Jams and other homemade items — paintings, photographs or wildflower bouquets — are also a great idea.

Check local regulations
Before you get in too deep, check the local regulations in your town or city. Some local governments are more strict than others about zoning, permits, and signage regulations. Those will vary depending on our property is zone, and you might need a food handling permit based on what you decide to sell.

Find the best spot on your property
Pick a spot on your property that those driving by can see that you are there. Ensure it has easy access from the road. It’s your choice whether you want a permanent structure or tents and tables. Make sure you have shade for your produce, baked goods and eggs.

Figure out a payment system upfront
You don’t want people to take from the farmstand freely. Have a handle for a mobile payment option or a locked cashbox for people to pay what they owe you. You can attach a box on a permanent structure. Otherwise, Venmo, CashApp or PayPal are your best bets for ensuring payment.

Promote the farmstand
If you want to go all in, create a social media presence for your farmstand life. You can create a cute handle for social media, make reels and take photos to promote what you’re selling each week or each day — depending on your frequency of stocking the stand. This way, you can also get feedback from those who are shopping with you and encourage a farmstand community.
