Chick days are here, which means it’s time to start planning your flock! With so many options arriving at many of your local Co-ops this spring, it can be hard to know which breeds are the best fit — but we’re here to help!

Are you looking for hens that lay plenty of eggs? Do you want a breed that grows quickly for meat production? Maybe you want gentle breeds that are great for families or strikingly beautiful birds to add personality to your backyard. No matter your goals, there’s a breed that’s right for you.

Best Egg Layers
If you’re looking for chickens that will fill your egg basket, these breeds are often some of the top choices:
  • Gold Comet – One of the most prolific layers, Gold Comets produce large brown eggs almost daily.
  • White/Brown Leghorn – Known for their high energy and efficiency, these birds lay an abundance of large, white eggs.
  • Easter Egger – If you love colorful eggs, this fun breed often lays shades of blue and green.
  • Black Australorp – One of the best layers of all the heavy breeds, Australorps are gentle and reliable producers.

Best for Meat Production
If raising birds for meat is your goal, these fast-growing breeds are excellent choices:
  • Cornish Rock Cross – A top meat breed that grows rapidly, reaching processing weight in just 6–8 weeks.
  • Bielefelder – A dual-purpose breed that provides both large eggs and a substantial meat yield.
  • Black Giant – A slow-growing but hearty bird that produces excellent meat.

Best for Family-Friendly Flocks
Raising chickens with kids or looking for a friendly backyard companion? These docile breeds are great options:
  • Buff Orpington – Super gentle and fluffy, Buff Orpingtons are known for their sweet temperaments.
  • Speckled Sussex – Curious and friendly, these birds love interacting with people.
  • Salmon Faverolle – A unique and affectionate breed with feathered feet and a friendly personality.

Most Unique and Beautiful Breeds
For those who want an eye-catching flock, these breeds stand out with their colors and patterns:
  • Mystic Onyx – Stunning black feathers with a beetle-green sheen, plus they lay dark eggs!
  • Jubilee Orpington – A rare, beautifully speckled breed with a calm disposition.
  • Polish (Buff, Silver, White Crested Black, and White Crested Blue) – Known for their wild, feathery crests that make them look like they’re wearing a hat.
  • Blue Laced Red Wyandotte – Gorgeous blue and red feathering make these birds a showstopper.

Looking for Something Different? Consider Ducks and Turkeys!
Chick season isn’t just for chickens — many Co-ops will also have a variety of ducks, geese, and turkeys available, including:
  • Cayuga Ducks – A striking black duck that lays dark eggs.
  • Pekin Ducks – A classic choice for meat and eggs.
  • Heritage Turkeys – Perfect for those interested in raising their own Thanksgiving bird.

This list is just a starting point to help you choose the right breeds, but there are plenty of other great options to consider. If you have questions about which birds are best for your needs, call or visit your local Co-op — we’re happy to help you find the perfect chicks for your farm or backyard!
