Have Cattle? The USDA Wants to Know How Many

Jun 30, 2025

During the first two weeks of July, farmers can tell the U.S. Department of Agriculture just how many head of cattle they have.

This survey from the National Agricultural Statistics Service is mailed to 18,000 cattle operations across the country, including those in Tennessee.

“This information helps producers make timely, informed business decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “It also helps packers and government leaders evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export. Obtaining the current count of cattle will serve as an important decision-making tool for the entire agriculture industry.”

As part of the survey, cattle producers will have the opportunity to report their beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop, death loss, and cattle on feed information.

To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate in the survey, NASS offers the option of responding via the website agcounts.usda.gov, telephone, mail, or a personal interview with a local NASS representative.

The July Cattle report will be released on July 25 at 3 p.m. eastern time.

This and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov/publications

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is launching a new online portal to streamline reporting of transactions involving U.S. agricultural land by foreign persons, which can include businesses and governments, under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978 (AFIDA). The new online portal is part of a broader effort to strengthen enforcement and protect American farmland as USDA continues its implementation of the National Farm Security Action Plan (PDF, 1.2 MB).
