Beef & Forage Systems Field Day September 24

Beef cattle producers are invited to learn about precision livestock management at an upcoming Beef & Forage Systems Field Day. Hosted by the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, the event will include topics of interest to beef cattle producers. The field day takes place Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 8 a.m. CDT at the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center at Spring Hill. Experts from UT AgResearch and UT Extension will provide producers with information on the latest research and practices in beef production.

                  “We are excited to share research outcomes relevant to cow efficiency, bull development and computer vision technology focused on improving cattle health,” says Kevin Thompson, director of the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. “In addition, we will again offer the popular ‘hands on’ forage discussions designed to bring value to permanent pastures and seasonal gap filling forage planning.”

                  Pre-registration is available online by clicking here until Tuesday, September 17. Cost to attend is $10, however UT students, faculty and staff can attend for free. Same day registration begins at 8 a.m. CDT, with the welcome presentation starting at 8:30. Lunch will be provided and vendor tents are available to visit. Programs will conclude with a Q&A panel at 2 p.m. CDT.

  • Hay Quality: From Soil to Rumen
  • Demonstration of Pregnancy Detection Methods
  • Developing an Automatic Body Condition Scoring System for Cattle Using Computer Vision
  • Time for Some R&R: Importance of Research When Striving to Maximize Reproductive Efficiency
  • Using Genomics to Understand Cow Efficiency and Sustainability Traits

In the next few weeks, the brood of periodical cicadas that last emerged in 2008 will be singing and looking for mates before laying their eggs for the next emergence in 17 years.

 

The 17-year periodical cicadas of Brood XIV will begin to emerge when the soil temperature at 8 inches deep reaches 64 degrees, which is estimated to be in late April to early May.
