Using Ag Technology to Make Precise Seed Decisions

Oct 12, 2020

As this year’s harvest season comes to a close, we’re getting our first glimpses of product performance. Every year, WinField® United’s Answer Plot® program generates thousands of data points across a wide spectrum of geographies and environments.

The R7® Tool outputs that data through functions including The Performance Mapper, The Top 10 function, and Corn Characterization Charts (CHT Tool). You can use this data to help compare product performance as you start thinking about seed purchases for next year.

The Performance Mapper tool lets you see yield results by location and includes data from Answer Plot locations, as well as on-farm insights trials. The Top 10 function was designed to provide a quick glance at top-performing hybrids in specific areas and give general management tips for these products. Within a week of harvesting at an Answer Plot location, the data is available in the Performance Mapper and Top 10 function in R7.

The CHT Tool provides a more in-depth look at how products performed in different environments and gives more comprehensive placement information. Categories for comparison include soil type, crop rotation activity, plant population, and management practices, allowing you to control — and capitalize on — variability in your fields. As harvest wraps up, expect to see new yield and performance data available in the CHT Tool.

By using the Performance Mapper, Top 10, and CHT capabilities in the R7 Tool, you can visually compare the performance of multiple products to find the best fit for your acres. For more information about using R7 for precise seed decisions, contact your local Co-op.

Any seasoned farmer will tell you that the occasional down year is to be expected, even anticipated, although it’s no fun while it’s happening.

Over a year on the farm, the planting, growing, and harvest seasons are usually the stars of the show and command most of the attention of any casual observer. Less flashy but equally important, though, is the planning and maintenance season — the winter period between harvest and planting. It’s often the decisions and prep work that happens over winter that makes the road to spring that much smoother and a successful crop season more likely.
