How to Prepare a Winter Survival Kit

It’s that time of year when the weather during the day can be unpredictable, but the nights are consistently cold. Even at temperatures around 40 degrees, hypothermia can set in if you are caught outside for an extended period of time.
 
   While snow certainly creates a dazzling winter wonderland, it can also create hazardous driving conditions. An emergency on the road can happen to anyone, so don’t get caught unprepared – expect the best but prepare for the worst.
 
Here’s a list of items to you might consider keeping in your vehicle in case of an emergency that requires you to spend a prolonged period in a cold vehicle or to help you get back on the road quickly and safely.
 
  • Blanket, gloves, and a toboggan
  • Hand warmers
  • Ice scraper
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Lighter and/or box of matches
  • Candle
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire chains
  • Bottled water
  • Cell phone car charger
