Tie-outs and family ties

Winners of state junior livestock expos and highlight family’s role in their success
Story and photos by Hannah Nave 8/29/2018

At the Tennessee Junior Beef Expo in Murfreesboro, Murray Perkins stands proudly with his family and supporters with the Reserve Champion market steer that was fed Co-op feed throughout the summer. At this year’s Junior Livestock Expos, Murray won two showmanship titles, had two of the top five steers, and stood in several champion drives. He said he couldn’t ask for a better end to his senior year of high school.

In the livestock barns, family and pit crew ensure the showman and animal are ready to perform. Like stage crew in a play, each has a different role, so when the calf or lamb walks into the ring they look their best.

For Murray Perkins, who had a very busy schedule at this year’s 47th annual Tennessee 4-H Junior Livestock Exposition, his family is his backbone and plays a major part of his successes.

On their century farm, the Perkinses enjoy raising their 65 Shorthorn, ShorthornPlus, and Angus-derived commercial cattle.

John and Paula Perkins, with their children Morgan, Melinda, and Murray, work on their 300-acre, fifth-generation farm outside Paris. Murray is the youngest of the three siblings.

Morgan is now married to Justin Chilcutt, assistant store manager at Henry Farmers Cooperative in Paris. She also recently graduated from pharmacy school and will begin working alongside her uncle at the family’s local pharmacy, Perkins Drugs. Melinda is the director of Youth Programs & Outreach for the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association. Murray recently graduated from Henry County High School and will be attending Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., as a member of the livestock judging team.

“Growing up, my family always showed livestock,” said Murray. “As soon as I could walk, I was out at the barn watching them. Now, it is so much more. I travel the state and country doing the thing we all love as a family.”

The whole family was beaming to see Murray succeed at his final 4-H Expo.

“It was always my dad’s dream to see us show livestock,” said Melinda. “So now that we get to live the experience, it means so much to all of us.”

Murray has had a successful senior year, including being named Tennessee FFA State Star Farmer, serving as a West Tennessee FFA Regional Officer, winning both sheep and beef showmanship at Expo, successes at national shows, being top five premier exhibitor in four divisions between sheep and beef, winning two of the top five steers, and standing in both sheep and beef market champion drives.

“It is so bittersweet. I couldn’t ask for a better way to end my showing and 4-H career,” said Murray. “I am very thankful.”

Melinda made it clear that showing together was the best part of showing: “Success for us is the combination of our shared passion, loving the job, and working together as a family.”

The Tennessee 4-H Expo allows 4-Hers and FFA members to exhibit their pampered livestock. Tennessee Junior Sheep Expo was July 5-7 at Hyder-Burks Arena, in Cookeville. There were 227 exhibitors and 928 sheep. Tennessee Junior Beef Expo was held July 12 and 13 at the Tennessee Livestock Center in Murfreesboro with 311 exhibitors showing 718 calves.

As it has done in past years, Tennessee Farmers Cooperative was involved at Junior Livestock Expo by presenting the top two steer and lamb exhibitors in the market shows a champion jacket and a belt buckle. Winners are given the opportunity to earn more if they have been giving their animal Co-op feed. Murray Perkins received $100 from TFC because he fed his Reserve Champion Market Steer Co-op feed.
