Sessions on retail beef sales offered to producers

8/1/2012

The University of Tennessee Center for Profitable Agriculture, in collaboration with county UT Extension offices, will conduct six educational workshops — three in Middle Tennessee and two in East Tennessee — later this month for beef cattle producers interested in learning about marketing meat products directly from their farms.

Because a meal will be provided for each participant, pregistration must be made at least five days prior to the event.

Here’s the workshop schedule and the person to contact for preregistration:

Monday, Aug. 20 — Marshall County, 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting (Ricky Skillington, 931-359-1929); Lincoln County, lunch meeting (David Qualls, 931-433-1582); and 6:30 p.m., Cannon County, supper meeting (Bruce Steelman, 615-563-2554).

Tuesday, Aug. 21 — Hamblen County, 11:30 a.m., lunch meeting (Mannie Bedwell, 423-586-6111); Sevier or Blount County, 6:30 p.m. supper meeting (Alan Bruhin, 865-453-3695 or John Wilson 865-982-6430).

Monday, Aug. 27 — Williamson County, 6:30 p.m., supper meeting (Dewayne Perry, 615-790-5721).

Each workshop will address direct retail sales to consumers (including at farmers markets) and the sale of live animals for custom processing.  Two to three hours in length, all workshops will cover the same materials.  Every registered participant will be given a copy of UT Extension’s new publication, “Basic Regulatory Considerations for Retail and Non-Retail Meal Sales in Tennessee.”

Participation in this educational program counts toward eligibility for 50 percent Tennessee Ag Enhancement Program (TAEP) cost-share in the value-added sector for farm-fresh beef projects.  However, organizers stress, participation does not apply to other value-added producers’ projects such as jams, jellies, and cheese.

For more information about TAEP and educational requirements for the 50-percent cost-share, contact Jon Frady with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture at 615-837-5344 or by email at Jon.Frady@tn.gov.  Additional information is also available online at http://www.tn.gov/taep.
