To estimate plant population per acre, count the number of plants
in a length of row that equals 1/1000 or 1/100 of an acre and multiply by 1,000
or 100, respectively. Make several counts in different rows in different
parts of the field, then average these counts. Use the table to determine
the length of row needed to equal a partial acre.
Example:What is the plant population in a field with 30-inch rows?
Population/Acre = (the number of plants in 17.4 feet) x 1,000
Example:Example: What is the row length equal to 1/1000 acre in 32-inch
rows? 522.7 ÷ 32 (row width) = 16.3

Grain Formula
All crop yields can be easily calculated by using the
following formula and inserting the appropriate factor for each
crop from the table below.
Yield = (100 - moisture) x (lbs. of grain) x (factor) ÷
row length in feet) ÷ (row width in inches x no. of rows)
Example: 4,000 lbs. of 17.5% shelled corn from eight
30-inch rows, 1,000 feet long.
Yield = 82.5 x 4,000 x 110.465 ÷ 1,000 ÷ 240 = 151.9 Bu./A.

* Sorghum weight or bushels at current moisture x factor = weight
or bushels at standard moisture.
** Grain weight in pounds/acre at current moisture ÷ pounds/bushel
from table = bushel/acre at standard moisture.

Silage Formula
(100 - actual % silage moisture) x (green wt. silage in
tons/A.) ÷ (30) = tons/a. of silage adjusted to 70%
moisture. For 65% moisture silage, divide by 35 instead
of 30. For dry weight basis, divide by 100.
Calculating Acreage
Corn, Soybeans, Sorghum & Sunflower
Row length (ft.) x row width (in.) x no. of rows
÷ 522,720 = no. of acres
Wheat & Drilled Crops
Length (ft.) x harvest width (ft.) ÷ 43,560 = no. of acres
